Exodus 16-17 – The LORD who provides

Walking Through Exodus

Devotions - Week 8

The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
Exodus 16:17-18
Welcome to this week’s Devotion. In our walk through Exodus, we arrived at Exodus 16-17. In our sermon this week, Cameron helpfully unpacked these two chapters that speak of God’s wonderful commitment to provide for his people as they walked out of Egypt and through the wilderness; manna, quail, water, clothes and shoes that didn’t wear out.

Time after time God graciously provides. Time after time God’s people grumble and complain.

This week I want to lead us in a song of worship. It’s a song called “Provider” and it was written in response to God’s miraculous provision in a time of personal need for me – Listen to “Provider” here.

My then fiancée and I were about to get married, we were moving house, starting new jobs, graduating from university, helping to plant a new church venue. There was a lot going on and lot of money going out.

I needed God’s provision. And because God is who He says He is; He provided for our every need and continues to do so to this day.

Apply

As you sing this song or listen to the lyrics, invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you and ask yourself or the people you’re with, a few questions…

  1. Where have I seen God provide in the last year?

  2. What am I trusting God for at the moment?

  3. What am I grumbling about rather than praying about?

Take some time now to read and reflect on Matthew 6:25-34.

  1. How would you summarise Jesus’ teaching here in these verses?

  2. What lessons can we learn from looking at the birds of the air and the flowers of the fields?

  3. Jesus tells us that our Heavenly Father knows what we need. In what ways is this a powerful remedy for worry?

Prayer

And you finish your reflections, I’d encourage you to spend some time in prayer. If you are on your own, come to the Lord as you are wherever you are. If you’re with your Life Group or household; why not join together in praying for one another…

  • Bring your own needs to God.

  • Stand in prayer with those you know are in need.

  • Confess and repent of grumbling or self-reliance.

  • Express your renewed trust to God.

Father God,

We thank you that you are our provider. You are the God who hears our grumbling. You hear our cries for help. You are the God of the Exodus who provides, saves and leads us in your unfailing love. Help us to trust you more deeply with every area of our lives.

Amen.
